The Sony Alpha 9 III is Sony's speed-focused full-frame mirrorless camera, released in 2024. It features the world's first global shutter in a full-frame sensor, which eliminates rolling shutter distortion entirely — critical for sports, wildlife, and fast-action photography. It shoots at 120 fps burst with no blackout.
The A9 III has one CFexpress Type A slot and one SD UHS-II slot. The two slots have different performance ceilings.
CFexpress Type A slot: For XAVC S-I (All-Intra) 4K at 120fps, which generates the highest data rate the camera produces, Sony requires a CFexpress Type A card. Standard XAVC S 4K at 30fps can use either slot.
SD UHS-II slot: For 4K 30fps and slower modes, a UHS-II V60 card is sufficient. For higher-bitrate 4K modes including All-Intra formats, use the CFexpress slot rather than the SD slot — the SD bus cannot sustain the required throughput for the camera's top recording modes.
The most common error on dual-slot bodies: using a card's general write speed rating to evaluate the SD slot without checking the SD-specific requirement. The A9 III's SD slot requirement (V60 for high-bitrate modes) is lower than the CFexpress slot requirement — they are different ceilings for different slots.
The A9 III has a standard 3.5mm TRS mic input. It is fully compatible with DJI Mic 2, DJI Mic Mini, and Rode Wireless GO II — all three include or can use a 3.5mm TRS output cable.
For action and sports use, the DJI Mic Mini is the most practical option given its small receiver footprint on the camera.
Body weight of the A9 III is approximately 585g. With representative lenses:
For a sports and wildlife shooting profile where gimbals are primarily used with telephoto lenses, the DJI RS 4 is the appropriate recommendation.
